Raffia vs. paper straw hats

Two straws that look alike in a photo and behave nothing alike in a suitcase — an honest side-by-side from the people who brand both.

The short answer

Choose raffia when the hat has to last: it rolls up, packs flat, copes with humidity and springs back, which is why it owns travel retail and gift shops. Choose paper straw when the hat only has to look good for one day: it is light, even and the budget option, but it softens in rain and humidity. If you are unsure, ask one question: will this hat ever get wet, packed or worn again next week?

Where raffia earns its keep

Raffia is a soft palm-fibre braid, and that softness is the point: it survives luggage, beach bags and being sat on, then recovers with a shake. It is relaxed by nature and will never hold the crisp lines of a wired, graded braid — so it suits holiday shops, resort welcome bags and destination weddings rather than a sharp uniform look. See our packable raffia & travel hats.

Where paper straw is the honest choice

Paper straw is woven paper: light, consistent from hat to hat and convincing at arm’s length, which makes it a sensible pick for a one-day festival, a sports-day giveaway or a promotional handout. Its limit is water — rain and humidity soften it for good — so we quote it under its real name and never as a season hat. When the hat has to hold a wide brim through a full summer outdoors, a palm or seagrass braid such as our wide-brim straw sun hats is the better spec than either.

Branding works the same on both

Neither straw should be stitched through the crown — it chews the braid. Your logo goes on a woven band, a patch applied to the band, or a print under the brim, and the same band design can sit on a raffia hat and a paper-straw hat in one order. See branded bands, patches & under-brim prints.

The verdict

Pick raffia for travel retail, gift shops, welcome bags and anything worn more than once or packed in a suitcase.

Pick paper straw for one-day events, festivals and giveaways where a light, even hat at the lowest cost matters most and the forecast is dry.
